We now rent GPS backpack units coupled to radiological detectors. See our Equipment page or contact us for more information.
GPS Based Radiological Surveys
GPS Overview
ERG began using GPS in 1994 and has since used it to successfully characterize and clean up multiple sites with acreages in excess of 500 acres. We have obtained approval by the NRC to use gamma data as primary verification data.
We use a variety of methods to maximize productivity while maintaining a high density coverage. See below for some examples of our systems.

Phases of Radiological Surveys Support
Site Characterization
  • Surface soil contamination
  • Collect data at points
  • Collect data on-the-move
  • Data presentation within hours
  • Gamma survey for up to 25 acres per day
  • Establish grids without land surveyors
  • Document soil sampling locations
Radiological Control Monitoring
  • Use data maps for establishing contaminant boundaries
  • Use GPS to set stakes at boundary lines
  • GPS radiological surveys quickly document decontamination progress
  • Replace old data with new data in removal areas for a final status survey
Final Verification
  • High density gamma data presentations provide high degree of assurance that property has been decontaminated
  • High density gamma data may serve as principal method of verification when coupled with radionuclide-in-soil correlations
